‘Mad March Hares’ box in the fields by the light of the Full Moon. Some say this is to compete with rivals for a mate, but now it is believed that it is male and female who box in ritualised competition, more dance than fight. The female rebuffs the male until she is ready to mate, which also gives her the opportunity to assess his strength, prowess and suitability to father her leverets.

The Full Moon is pictured as concentric bands of blue and silver Celtic strapwork (moon colours), surrounding the medieval ‘Triple Hare’ design, which is often found carved as roof bosses in churches on Dartmoor, Devon.
